- Online edition of a print publication
- Highly customized version of Wordpress
Springfield College was in a bind. Due to COVID, a decision was made to reduce costs across campus for the remainder of 2020 — including the printing cost of Triangle magazine. The client needed to transition the issue that was then being designed from print to fully digital.
Guy With Glasses architected and built the digital publication in record time for the College. Developed as a highly-customized version of Wordpress, the online version of Triangle has many features which include:
- A custom-designed theme, which gives the publication a unique look that has similarities to the print publication.
- Extensive coding to alter the admin interface for a magazine that is published in issues, including a child/parent data structure where articles are attached to issues.
- Custom-developed site navigation structure where the current issue is the home page. When a new issue is added, the superceded issue automatically goes into the past issue archives.
- Custom developed issue navigation structure that follows the content page order of the print publication. This is displayed on the issue's 'home' page, which functions like a table of contents with teasers to the Features and Departments — and also at the end of each article, where there are teasers for the previous item and the next item.
- Much work to make the articles interesting and engaging, and to enhance the stories — including: carefully selected imagery; custom graphics; typography; breaking the margins; use of captions, pullquotes, and graphical headers; background imagery, parallax and motion effects, and more.
- Extensive alterations of the Wordpress admin to make the publication easy to maintain over time. There is a custom interface where admins can view and work with the content by issue, rather than as the default list of all posts.
- Admin documentation for working with the site as well as for server migration.
Guy With Glasses has designed Issue 90.1, which can be seen here. Note: other issues may have been prepared by College staff and the articles won't have as many design features.
